What is pickleball? Pickleball is a sport that combines different elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It can be played indoors or outdoors on a badminton sized court with a slightly modified tennis net (it needs to be slightly lowered). It is played with a paddle and a small ball with holes in it. You can play in either doubles or singles (doubles are more common). This game can be enjoyed by all ages, with a multitude of skill levels and mobility ranges. What are the rules/basics of pickleball? The head of the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist at contact. When serving: The server’s arm must be moving in an upward arc when the ball is first struck, after that, when the paddle comes in contact with the ball, it must not be above waist height. When serving, the servers’ feet must be outside of the court (not touching the court or the outside extension of the court ex. sidelines), at least one foot must be behind the baseline on the playing surface (see pictures below) The serve also must go cross court to the opposing side

Running Gear It is important to ensure that you have a sturdy pair of running shoes that fit not only your feet but are appropriate for the terrain that you are running on. For treadmill running and road running, wearing a pair of durable running shoes with comfortable heal support is a good place to start. For track running and sprint training, spikes or more curved sole running shoes might be better. For trail running, a sturdy pair of running shoes with more grip and groves on the bottom for added support and stability may be needed. Asics recommends that your running shoes are replaced every 724-885 kilometers. Asics also suggest that if your running shoes don’t have any signs of excessive wear or use, you may be able to wear them slightly longer than the recommended usage without injury. Furthermore, it is important to take into account the weather before you set out on an outdoor run. Proper attire is essential to avoid over heating or becoming too cold. Ultimately, clothing should offer sun protection, have moisture wicking and quick drying material, and proper insulation/air flow depending on weather. Clothing as such will help keep your body cool and ensure optimal comfort as your internal body temperature increases during the run. Warm weather: clothing should help wick away sweat, quick drying, cooling and provide sun protection Cool weather: layers that still optimize air flow, gloves, heat protection. Sun protection is also another key aspect to take into account when running outdoors. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) apparel offers UV (ultraviolet)A and UVB ray protection and is beneficial for outdoor runs on sunny days. The higher the UPF rating the greater the protection from UVA and UVA B. Below is a link to an article outlining everything you need to know about sun and UV protection when exercising outdoors:

The rotation of the body is required for various rotational sports such as frisbee, golf, baseball, and tennis. Bodily rotation is the motion of twisting the upper body around its transverse plane.
Three key anatomical components of the body are involved in rotation: the hip, knee, and spine. Each component contains rotational muscle groups that can produce a high torque force for the athlete.
Physiotherapy can help improve an athlete's muscular function, strength, and range of motion to enhance an athlete's ability to perform rotational activities!

Today is Rowan’s Law Day in honour of Rowan Stringer who tragically passed away in 2013 due to secondary impact syndrome. The Ontario government passed the legislation known as Rowan’s Law in 2018 in an effort to bring awareness to concussion safety and progress education for athletes and coaches. A key component of this legislation is Rowan’s Law Day. To honour this day, we ask you to wear purple. To find more information on concussions and athlete safety visit the various posts we have made outlining concussions and treatments.
This weeks concussion post is all about baseline testing.
Studies have shown that symptoms alone are a poor indicator of recovery. Often athletes may be exposed to additional risk by returning to play while there is ongoing brain dysfunction. Although self-reported symptoms may diminish after a few days or weeks, it’s often found that objective deficits can persist longer than this. This is where baseline testing comes into play. Objective measures such as balance, reaction time, cognitive ability, memory, visual processing and physical capacity are need.
As mentioned by Ian in this post, the purpose of baseline testing is not to diagnose. Rather it is used as a tool to assist in making safe return to play decisions.
#concussionrecovery #concussionawareness #returntoplay #playsmart #baselinetesting
With fall and school sports starting up shortly, the Right Move team are here to bring awareness to concussions.
For the next 6 weeks leading up to Rowan’s Law Day, we will be posting various videos and information on concussions, warning signs, baseline testing, assessment, and return to play.
Concussions are a serious injury that can greatly impact a young athlete’s life if not taken seriously.
In today’s post, you will find warning signs and symptoms of a concussion. Learn what secondary impact syndrome is and what you can do to manage your symptoms.
Experiencing any of the listed concussion symptoms? Reach out to the Right Move team for an assessment.
Keep an eye out for next week’s post where Ian will speak to baseline testing. #concussion #concussionrecovery #concussionawareness #rowanslaw #secondaryimpactsyndrome

Running Mechanics Pt. 2
Do you have pain while you are running? Are you getting frustrated that you aren’t meeting your running speed or distance goals?
If you answered yes to any of these questions this post is for you!
🏃🏽♀️ Proper Running Technique 🏃🏽♀️
- Stand tall
- Relax your shoulders
- Lightly cup hands
- Maintain a consistent breathing rate
💪🏼Strength Training for Runners 💪🏼
1. Balance and coordination
Unilateral movements increase stability, fixes any asymmetries in the lower body and increase muscular balance and coordination to improve joint stability while optimizing stride efficiency.
2. Core Strength
Core strength is essential to ensure stability of your torso and prevent unwanted side to side movement while you are running. A weak core puts strain on other body parts which can put you at risk for injury.
3. Explosive power
Movements that focus on explosive power in your lower body are key to optimal running speed and efficiency of muscle fibre recruitment to enhance running performance.
👟 running gear 👟
- Proper running shoes that are appropriate for running terrain
- Sun protection
- Quick dry and sweat wicking apparel
🦶🏽Bracing and Orthotics🦵🏽
The Right Move is now offering orthotic and bracing services through Footmaxx and Breg bracing. For more information visit the “service” drop down menu on rightmovept.com
👟 ATTENTION RUNNERS 👟

If so, the Right Move has the perfect preparation plan for you!
Whether you are just getting into running or have been running for years, following these running tips and tricks will help you meet your running goals, prevent injury and improve your overall health and fitness.
📝Planning 📝
Coming up with a specific plan that involves goal setting, mental preparation and a progressive plan is essential to effective, pain free running. The key is to not do too much too soon, start slowly, establish realistic goals that are tailored to your aspirations and create a positive mind set.
Additionally, planning for the surface that you will be running on (trail, road, treadmill) will be beneficial to prepare for the various obstacles and hazards that may be present during your run.
🏃🏽♀️Warm Up and Cool Down 🏃🏽♀️
Incorporating a 5-10 minute warm up and cool down is essential for a successful run and injury prevention.
💦 Hydration 💦
Hydrating before, during and after workouts allows for your body to naturally bring energy to our cells, limit cramping and cushion joints. Thus, during moderate to vigorous intensity exercise, we need to be drinking more to prevent injury and optimize recovery time.

In response to the Ontario stay-at-home order many elective surgeries have been postponed to ensure hospital resources are allocated to the severely ill patients who may need them.
Elective surgeries are procedures that are done for medical conditions that are non-urgent or non life-threatening. This includes but is not limited to arthritis, ankle sprains/strains, knee and hip replacement/reconstruction surgeries, sports related injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome etc.
These various medical conditions can be extremely painful and/or limit function.
The postponement of elective surgeries may be disappointing, and you may be left wondering what you should be doing in the meantime.
Proactive next steps:
Physiotherapy can help manage pain and increase mobility until surgeries are approved to run again. Patients awaiting elective surgeries will benefit from outpatient physiotherapy with regard to:
- Pain relief
- Increase range of motion
- Building strength
- Injury/condition management
If you have any questions regarding elective surgeries and physiotherapy for the management of your medical condition, please feel free to reach out to the Right Move team!

The Respiratory Therapy (RT) team at Kingston General Hospital have been working tremendously hard since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as frontline workers.
Respiratory Therapists are key members of the hospital health care team during the pandemic and are often the first health care professionals to be called to monitor and treat patients impacted by the COVID-19 virus.
As a token of our appreciation, the Right Move will be donating $300 in Tim Hortons gift cards to the RT team at KGH to enjoy a coffee or treat while they are working long, challenging days with COVID-19 patients.

**ATTENTION GOLFERS**
Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys hitting a piece of synthetic rubber with a metal club. On the other hand, to truly enjoy the game of golf one should be able to temper expectations and practice patience with themselves.
A few key biomechanical considerations that all golfers should consider before dusting off that fancy set of clubs this April are as follows:
A) Thoracic Rotation
How freely does your body move as it twists each direction?
One of the jobs of the mid portion of our back is to provide enough mobility to rotate in space.
B) Hip Mobility
Does your hip joint have enough rotational flexibility to move into internal rotation?
Being able to internally rotate on your lead hip will leave to a smoother follow through.
C) Hip Stability
Do the neighbouring hip muscles have enough power to anchor your lower body to the ground?
Being able to control necessary muscle movements (or lack thereof) helps us hit the ball with more consistency.
D) Motor Control
Are you able to coordinate/time different components of the motion appropriately?
Putting all the different fundamentals together is part of what makes golf so complex.
Focused practice and tricks to help with motor learning are things we are very comfortable talking about here at Right Move Physiotherapy. If you’re experiencing difficulties with any of the above tasks or simply want to up your game, please feel free to reach out as we’d love to lend you a hand!

Functional Dry Needling for biomechanical imbalances of the lower extremity
• Dry needling is a useful tool when attempting to balance neuromuscular tone in the hip/knee regions of the lower body.
• One of the proposed mechanisms is a reduction in acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction
• Once treatment is finished, emphasis is placed on rebuilding proper movement patterns which will guide a progression back to regular physical activity.
Make the Right Move today and call our office for more information and how we might be able to help nagging pain and muscle imbalances!

At The Right Move Physiotherapy, we are proponents of comprehensive, multimodal baseline testing for athletes involved in sports with high risk of concussion. When dealing with concussion, having access to an athlete’s pre-injury physical and mental abilities allows clinicians to make a more informed clinical decision. In the absence of any advanced diagnostic technique to accurately determine concussion recovery, multimodal baseline testing is the best tool available to ensure a safe return to high-risk sport. When used appropriately, baseline tests are a vital part of the decision-making tree and combining each test makes for stronger clinical decisions. These tests do not make clinical decisions; they simply help clinicians to make better decisions.
•Call or e-mail us at Right Move to book your baseline test!

Posted @withrepost • @emilysetlack Road blocks are part of the process. After making some fairly foolish mistakes in the past, I have learned the importance of being proactive when dealing with setbacks and taking “minor” aches and pains seriously before they develop into major setbacks. I was having tightness and pain in my achilles so I booked an appointment with @rightmovept. .
I am grateful for the knowledge and help that I received from Ian Budge at The Right Move Physiotherapy in Kingston. I cannot recommend enough, Ian was able to spot an imbalance and gave me activation exercises to do before each run. After two treatments of shockwave, I have been able to resume PAIN FREE mileage and workouts. I am beyond thankful. .
Pay attention to little aches and catch them before they turn into something that's going to sideline you. There will always be other races waiting for you, look after your body and get help before it turns into a major injury. If you live in Kingston, book an appointment with @rightmovept and let them help guide you to pain free running. #HealthisWealth @sauconycanada #WeWhoRun #achillestendonitis PHOTO: @eyebrows_the_internet #CanadianRunningSeries @runcrswest @runcrs
